Why We Remember on Remembrance Day

Tuesday, November 10th, 2015

RemembranceDay

On November 11, 1918, representatives of the Allied Forces met with their German counterparts in a stationary train carriage in the Forest of Compiegne, France to agree on terms that would bring about the end of the First World War.

This auspicious day, which originally marked the end of “The Great War”, has become etched into our collective history and consciousness as Remembrance Day. Now, when we reflect on the sacrifices made in our name, the day takes on a wider significance.

It now symbolises a recognition of the bravery, valour and tragic circumstances of the men and women who have given their lives to protect us in all conflicts, as well as that of the servicemen and women who continue to risk their lives to keep us safe.

The Beverly Memorial Cenotaph

beverlycenotaphThe area of Beverly, Edmonton is home to the city’s oldest cenotaph memorial, The Beverly Memorial Cenotaph, which was erected in 1920. The history of this region became tragically entwined with that of The Great War when, in 1914, what had previously been a village became incorporated into a town.

Less than two weeks later, the dark clouds looming over Europe gave way to all-out war, and it wasn’t long before the town’s young men were called up and shipped across the Atlantic to join the struggle.

Nowadays, the cenotaph stands as a reminder of the loss and sacrifice of those young men, and that of the young men and women who continue to serve Canada so nobly to this day. Every year, the Beverly Memorial Cenotaph becomes the focal point for Edmonton’s Remembrance Day ceremonies, and marks the culmination of the city’s annual Remembrance Day military parade.

The Poppy

One of the most instantly recognisable symbols of our remembrance is the poppy. This pretty flower grows naturally on the fields of Belgium and France, where once, a century ago, millions of young men were locked in a deadly, tragic combat.

The poppies were first sold in Europe shortly after the war to raise funds for veterans charities, and began to gain popularity in Canada in 1921. Nowadays, showing our gratitude, respect and remembrance by wearing a poppy is a common occurrence each November, when we all bow our heads in reflection and consider the immensity of the gesture our servicemen and women made, make and will continue to make in the future, for us.

“The torch be yours to hold it high

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep

Though poppies grow

In Flanders Fields”

– Lt.-Col. John McCrae, Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. Died on January 28, 1918

An Urban Lifestyle with a Classic Vibe: Welcome to Oliver, a Historic Edmonton Neighbourhood

Friday, July 17th, 2015

OliverCommunity

The neighborhood of Oliver is one of Edmonton’s oldest and most densely populated communities in the city. As you’ll soon see, these two factors make Oliver one of the more coveted places to live in Edmonton.

Oliver Is Rich In History

Named after Frank Oliver, the neighborhood of Oliver was one of the first communities to be founded in the city. As such, the area is home to many historical buildings, including the Lemarchand Mansion. Other historical buildings include the Buena Vista building and Guiles Grocery. Many beautiful churches were constructed in this area around 1914 which still remain active today. Beautiful row houses, single family dwellings, and high-rise condos are all found within this neighborhood. Amazingly, they all blend together to make a very charming community.

124 Street (Edward Street) was the commercial district for Oliver in the early 1900’s. Home to trolley cars and street cars until the end of World War II, this area always was a booming part of the neighborhood. 124 Street has recently undergone a major renovation. New brick inlayed sidewalks, street lighting, and barrels of beautiful flowers have been added to the area. This revitalization has brought life back to 124 Street.

Superior Urban Edmonton Lifestyle

One of the things that residents of Oliver appreciate most is how everything they need is within walking distance of their homes. Shops, restaurants, entertainment and outdoor activities can all be found within minutes of any area of the neighborhood. Many residents brag that they only take their car out for special occasions because they walk or ride their bicycles everywhere.

Great For Those Who Love The Outdoors

Oliver has many activities for those who enjoy the outdoors. A community pool, several parks and a community garden are all found within this neighborhood. The Victoria Promenade is located in the western part of Oliver. The Promenade is part of the Edmonton Historical Trail and provides visitors with an exceptional view of the river valley. For those who love to follow trails or simply walk around town, Oliver is filled with well-kept walkways and is very pedestrian friendly.

Perfect Combination Of Downtown And Suburbs

One of the most exciting features of Oliver is how all of the structures within this neighborhood flow together. High rise buildings are scattered amongst the row homes, giving the perfect flow to the skyline. The old railway stations have been converted to strip malls, and many of the old warehouses have been refurbished to contain beautiful apartments and unique shops. In between all of the buildings, Oliver still remains green. You will find beautiful landscaping, trees, and open green spaces. All of this combines into the perfect living area.

Something For Everyone

Oliver is also a very diverse community. This diversity brings many things to this area, including fabulous restaurants, unique shops, and many different places of worship. The many different types of residences in this area also draw people from every age group and economic background. This combination of ages and interests makes Oliver a happy place to live.

For more information about the neighborhood of Oliver, please feel free to contact the Edmonton Home Tribe team.

Sometimes The First Home Is The Best Home

Saturday, June 27th, 2015

This week we had the pleasure of working with a lovely couple who were looking for a bungalow in a condo complex preferably in an adult community. Further understanding their lifestyle needs we determined that certain areas of the West end of Edmonton and St. Albert would be their more ideal locations largely due to the desire to live near their children and grandchildren. Narrowing it down we went on a showing appointment and viewed 5 homes one afternoon.

I think many people hope that when they fide “the one”, they will get a super sappy moment where they will cry out and scream “this is it”, however, this is not allows the case and that is ok.  We all have a gut reaction when viewing  a home and one will typically stand out more than the rest. In this case, the first home viewed was the perfect Edmonton home for our buyers. After viewing “x” amount of homes that were “not the right layout”, “didn’t have the type of floor they like”, “not a big enough garage” etc. we went back and decided to write an offer on the first home. It felt right the first time and made an even better impression the second viewing after seeing the other options presently on the Edmonton real estate market.

In the end, the community of Dechene was the right fit.

Next steps: Helping these home buyers remove conditions and move in! Cheers to another happy home buyer.
